Kew Home Renovation
THE KEW HOME RENOVATION BRIEF.
When we arrived at this authentic 1960s four bedroom family home, it was complete with original shag pile carpet and sunken living area. Our job with this Kew home renovation was to completely strip and remodel the property while retaining and highlighting some of the original period features.
OUR APPROACH
The clients had very clear specifications for the project, which we were able to meet.
The key features of the renovation project were as follow:
- We sourced the White Elba marble flooring that was featured throughout the interior and exterior.
- The pool area received a luxurious finishing touch with auto open/close sliding glass doors that comply with pool regulations.
- The back of the house became more light-filled with the installation of floor-to-ceiling frameless glass overlooking the pool area.
- A custom-made floating concrete hearth was installed for the yoga room, with the formwork built and concrete poured on site.
- We also created a grand entrance with custom-made Ironbark pivot entrance doors.
- The master bedroom also received a master bed made on site by Dwell Development craftsmen.
- Our team also carried out the installation of a commercial coolroom for the client, who was a qualified chef.
- All design elements and requirements for the project were completed in-house by Dwell Developments.
OBSTACLES THAT WE OVERCAME
Overall, the original building had dated interiors and original appliances and fixtures. There was also a lack of natural light, making the home dark. The property also had a lack of modern conveniences.
1. Marble floor tiles
The marble floor tiles were 1m x 1m, 20mm thick and each tile was extremely heavy. Due to the variance in thickness of each tile, the entire interior and exterior floor surfaces had to be honed perfectly flat.
2. Sliding doors
Some handmade crafting was required to build the exterior sliding doors. All the exterior sliding doors were manufactured from timber and then we had to clad them in copper once on site.
3. Commercial coolroom
Installing a commercial coolroom to a residential home required locating the condenser in an appropriate position, as not to disrupt the owners.
4. Glass sliding doors
The auto open/close sliding doors were complex to fit into a residential setting.
Concealing the motors to result in seamless function was challenging, but we were able to work out an aesthetically appealing and functional solution.

This Kew home renovation took nine months to complete and the final product resulted in the following top three results for the client:
- A stylish home with countless bespoke features unique to the clients’ needs.
- The timeless design highlighted by a feature article in Harper’s Bazaar magazine.
- The property value was undeniably increased, which also created more equity in the home.
